Maro is the water wine in Ploder-Rosenberg's four-element series, a quartet of amber wines fermented in clay amphorae, with up to a year on the skins and stems and long aging in clay and oak. The fruit comes from the family's biodynamically farmed vineyards on the Rosenberg in Vulkanland Steiermark, loam threaded with sand and gravel over volcanic ground, and the wine is bottled unfiltered. The 2016 has an easy, bright flow, exotic and perfumed, with the powdery grip of long skin contact. The name is Esperanto for sea, and the family's own pick at the table is trout; give the bottle a gentle turn before you pour, since they like the fine lees stirred back in.
