Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche run the house their family has built over five generations in Ludes, where the Bérêches have grown grapes since 1847. Their creed is short: plowed soils with no herbicides, old vines, long aging on the lees, and disgorging by hand. The Brut Réserve, the house's flagship and by far its largest cuvée, draws Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier in close to equal measure from Ludes, Ormes, and Trépail on the Montagne de Reims and from Mareuil-le-Port and the Grand Cru village of Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne. Most of it is fermented in barrel, kept from malolactic fermentation to hold its freshness, and blended with a generous share of reserve wine. This release is built on the 2023 harvest. Lemon confit, yellow apple, and apricot open onto a biscuity depth and a hint of marzipan, and the creamy, ample palate carries a delicate salinity into a long finish marked by chalk. The house style at its most welcoming.
