For nearly ten years, the signature at Leyenda on Brooklyn's Smith Street was the Tia Mia: Ivy Mix's mezcal take on the Mai Tai. Mix worked it out around 2010 at Lani Kai, Julie Reiner's short-lived Manhattan tiki bar, by swapping mezcal for the rhum agricole in Reiner's Mai Tai, and it was on the menu when the two opened Leyenda in 2015. The bar closed in March 2025. Working with Mix, Tip Top Proper Cocktails has since canned the drink as the first of its Proper Establishments releases: mezcal, Jamaican rum, orgeat, lime, and curaçao at 24 percent ABV, 100ml to the can. The mezcal brings the smoke and the rum its funk and fruit, with almond and citrus underneath. Pour it over crushed ice, crown it with mint and a lime wheel, and Leyenda gets one more round after all.
