Tegan Passalacqua spends his days as director of winemaking at Turley; Sandlands is where he pursues California's own history, forgotten grapes and old, own-rooted vineyards treated with the gravity most people reserve for Burgundy. This Zinfandel comes from Kirschenmann Vineyard, planted in 1915 in the silica-rich white sands of Lodi's Mokelumne River AVA and owned by Passalacqua himself since 2012; the head-trained vines are dry-farmed and have never known a rootstock. The winemaking is spare: native yeast fermentation in neutral vessels, aging in well-used French oak, no new wood, no adjustments. Black tea, violets, and red cherry lead into a supple palate with long, silky tannins. One of California's true cult labels, and Zinfandel argued back to seriousness.
