Quinta dos Roques is a third-generation family estate in Abrunhosa do Mato, a hamlet between Mangualde and Nelas. In the early 1980s the family stopped selling its grapes to the local co-op and planted native varieties on gentle granite slopes facing south; a winery of its own followed a few years later. The family's Quinta do Correio is a Dão that's ready to drink now: Jaen, the grape Spain knows as Mencía, leads a hand-picked blend with Alfrocheiro, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz, fermented and aged in stainless steel with only a small share of barrel-aged wine folded in. Expect forward wild berry fruit, a hint of pine needle, and a supple palate with gentle tannins. The name comes from the old posting station beside the vineyard (correio is Portuguese for mail), and this bottle delivers, whether dinner is something smoky off the grill, game, or a weeknight pasta.
