Monchiero Carbone carries the surnames of Marco Monchiero and Lucia Carbone, whose son Francesco runs the estate in Canale, in the Roero; the Carbone side planted Arneis on the Tanon hill in the early 1900s. Recit, Piedmontese dialect for "little king," reflects the family's conviction that Arneis ranks among Italy's noblest native grapes. It blends several vineyards across Canale, Vezza d'Alba, and Priocca, on sandy hills that were once the floor of a shallow sea, and is made entirely in stainless steel. Ripe pear and peach lead, touched with almond, on a generous, rounded palate that finishes dry and long. The label sets a lion's-head knocker above the proverb "every door has its own knocker," a reminder that every house keeps its secrets; this one shares them over antipasti or a seafood salad.
