Everyone called Lucia Gioetti la Bionda (the blonde), so her son Francesco Carbone went through life as Cecu d'la Biunda: a gentle man who loved Arneis when few outside Piedmont knew it. His grandson Francesco Monchiero named this Roero Arneis for him, and it comes from two vineyards. One, Tanone in Vezza d'Alba, was Cecu's own; he grew asparagus there, which tells you how sandy the soil is. The other, Renesio Incisa in Canale, sits on the hill long held to be the birthplace of Arneis, where the grape was recorded in the late 1400s. Expect white currant and pineapple with a little sage; the palate starts bright, then fills out, and the currant comes back on a savory finish that lingers. It will gain with time in the cellar, though a seafood risotto tonight makes a strong case for not waiting.
