Martin Nittnaus, a friend of the shop, grew up at the family winery in Gols, where Nittnaus wine has been made since 1684. His parents, Hans and Anita, converted to biodynamic farming in 2004 and are founding members of Respekt, the biodynamic growers' group, and in 2019 Martin, his brother Andi, and their cousin Lydia, who grew up there with him, launched a label of their own to take the family's work a step further. Elektra started as Martin's 2017 Grüner Veltliner, a name from Greek myth he chose because it sounded classical and anti-classical at once, and the first red Elektra followed in 2020. The Blaufränkisch comes from limestone and slate parcels in Jois, in the Leitha hills by Lake Neusiedl, and is destemmed by hand, fermented with wild yeasts, and aged in used 500-liter barrels. Ink and earth run deep beneath elderberry and cherry, yet the wine stays airy and juicy, with only the tannin it needs. The back label calls it a tightrope walk between weight and weightlessness; it crosses without a net.
