In 2014 Frédéric Lafarge, who also runs his family's renowned domaine in Volnay, and his wife Chantal, whose maiden name is Vial, bought their first 2.25 hectares in Beaujolais, and Fleurie Clos Vernay was one of the three wines of their debut vintage. The 1.33-hectare parcel, planted in 1975 and 1980, sits on the upper part of a south to southeast facing slope in a sheltered valley, rooted in granite and quartz, and the domaine is certified organic and Demeter biodynamic. The couple vinify in the traditional Burgundian way: roughly 15 percent whole clusters, native yeast fermentation in concrete, gentle extraction, and about a year in older 228 and 350 liter barrels and 30 hectoliter foudres. The 2017 is dense and structured for Fleurie, with blueberry, raspberry, and red fruit layered with iris, a touch of cocoa, and a savory note of game, carried by a bright freshness and firm, chalky tannins. A serious Beaujolais cru, built to reward time in the cellar.
