Fondo Antico farms 80 hectares in Contrada Portelli, in the province of Trapani in western Sicily, where the Polizzotti-Scuderi family planted its first vines around 1920 and Giuseppe Polizzotti brought the entire harvest back into the family cellar in 1995. Nenè is pure Nero d'Avola from limestone-rich soils of marine origin within sight of the Egadi Islands, macerated on its skins for fifteen days in temperature-controlled steel, then aged partly in wood and partly in tank. Cherry and red berries lead, with spice and a hint of forest floor, and a savory, faintly salty streak keeps the round fruit fresh and the next sip coming. The name belongs to the little boy in Leonardo Sciascia's story "Il mare colore del vino" who looks out from a train near Taormina and says the sea looks like wine; this bottle returns the compliment.
