Domaine Duseigneur counts five generations of growers, starting across the Rhône in Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres before settling in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. After a stint in the City of London, Bernard Duseigneur took the helm in 2002, and since 2007 he has worked in partnership with sommelier Philippe Faure-Brac. The vineyards are certified biodynamic by Biodyvin. Matteo takes its name from Matteo Giovanetti, the Italian painter who decorated the Palais des Papes in Avignon for Pope Clement VI in the 1340s, and its fruit comes from sand, gravel, and clay-limestone soils. The 2023 is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, aged nine months in oak barrels, and comes out fruit-forward and structured, with ripe cherry held in balance. Pour it with roast lamb or a slow-cooked daube.
