The Burlotto family bought the sixteenth-century castle of Verduno, long tied to the House of Savoy, in 1909, and when the family holdings were divided among three heirs, one branch became Castello di Verduno. Franco Bianco and Gabriella Burlotto lead the estate today with their daughter Marcella, and winemaker Mario Andrion has run the cellar since 2000 along firmly traditional lines: organic farming, indigenous yeasts, long macerations, and extended aging in large Slavonian botti. The classic Barolo draws on the estate's Verduno crus, Massara and Monvigliero, rooted in the pale Sant'Agata marls that make this northernmost commune of Barolo the source of its most perfumed, graceful wines. Verduno tradition from the family that has kept the castle for over a century.
