Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, grandson of the Marchese who created Sassicaia, chose the far end of the wine world for his own estate: Bodega Chacra, founded in 2004 in Patagonia's Río Negro Valley, a desert of ancient riverbed soils where seven inches of annual rain and relentless luminosity make biodynamic farming a natural fit. For Chardonnay, beginning in 2017, he partnered with Jean-Marc Roulot of Meursault, and the pedigree is audible in the glass. Drawn from a single parcel of vines roughly four decades old, in soils threaded with alluvial stones and calcareous matter, the wine ferments entirely in barrel with full malolactic and ages eleven months before release; the 2019 is the first vintage made wholly from estate fruit. Pure and driven, it walks a line between orchard fruit and savory salinity, zesty citrus at the core and serious length at the finish. Meursault's discipline, Patagonia's light.
