Neapolitan Giovan Battista Basile founded this estate in 1999 on land in Cinigiano, in the Montecucco hills of Tuscany's Maremma, that had gone uncultivated for thirty years. The vineyards face southwest at around 350 meters on mostly calcareous soils marked by galestro, ringed by woods and certified organic by CCPB. Cartacanta, the estate's Montecucco Sangiovese, is picked by hand, fermented in stainless steel, and aged a year in large casks and tonneaux of French oak, then six months in bottle. The 2021 is ripe and lively, with blackberry, spice, and a pinch of pepper over cedar and a faint resinous note. The name comes from carta canta, literally "the paper sings," the Italian saying that a deal in writing is a deal settled; here the wine does the talking, best of all with red meat, game, or aged cheese.
