Bruwer Raats founded Raats Family Wines in 2000 with a single-minded focus on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, and the winery was one of the driving forces behind the recognition of Stellenbosch's Polkadraai Hills as an official ward in 2007. Jasper is named for his late father, Jasper Senior, who served as viticulturist in the winery's early years before his death in 2009. Cabernet Franc leads the 2020 at 44 percent, with 25 percent Malbec, 23 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 6 percent Petit Verdot, and 2 percent Merlot. The grapes are sorted by hand three times and cold soaked for five days before fermentation, then basket pressed, and the wine spends 16 months in tight-grained French oak, all of it second to fourth fill. Violets and black currant open onto cedar, turned earth, crushed raspberry, and a hint of herbal tea, with silky tannins and juicy acidity driving a mouthwatering finish. A classically proportioned Cape blend, built to drink well now and for years to come.
