Riccardo Tiberio was working as export manager for a well-known Abruzzo winery when he came across a very old plot of genuine Trebbiano Abruzzese near the hill town of Cugnoli, a rarity in a region where other, similar-looking varieties were long planted in its place. He bought it in 2000, released a first vintage in 2004, and has since handed the estate to his children: Antonio farms the vineyards and Cristiana makes the wines. The vines grow at 350 meters on limestone over gravel and sand and are dry farmed, and this bottling is 100 percent Trebbiano Abruzzese from the estate's own massal selection. Only free-run juice is used, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, and the wine goes to bottle unfined and unfiltered. Pear, grapefruit, apricot, and orange blossom on the nose give way to green apple, almond, and anise, all carried by a bright, mouthwatering freshness. Pour it with anything from the Adriatic, from crudo to fritto misto.
