Paul and Kathryn Sloan launched Small Vines in 1998 as a company that planted and farmed vineyards, built on higher-density, European-style vine spacing. Their first wine followed in 2005, and every bottle is estate grown from vineyards they farm organically and regeneratively. The winery and the Sloans' home sit on TBH Vineyard in the southern Green Valley, planted at 3,630 vines to the acre on very fine Goldridge sand over sandstone just two feet down. Fog and wind push in through the Petaluma Gap, and the site sees the coldest nights of any Sloan vineyard; TBH is a core source for this Sonoma Coast bottling. The cellar work is spare: native-yeast fermentations, whole clusters on many lots, French barrels from Burgundy made from staves air-dried at least three years, and bottling unfined. The 2019 is medium-bodied, with pomegranate, blood orange, and red cherry up front and strawberry, a hint of pine, and a floral lift of rose behind. A grower's Pinot Noir.
