Quinta das Maias takes its name from May, the month the weaver's broom, called maia here, flowers across the hills near Gouveia and turns them yellow; a blooming branch of it marks the label. First planted in 1893, the estate sits on a high Dão plateau at roughly 600 meters, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela and inside its Natural Park, with certified organic vines rooted in sandy granite. The Lourenço family of Quinta dos Roques, whose cellar has vinified the estate's grapes since the early 1990s, bought the property in 1997. Malvasia Fina leads a blend of native Portuguese varieties that includes Cerceal and Encruzado; the fruit is gently pressed, settled by gravity, fermented cool, and rested in stainless steel. The 2024, ripened slowly through a mild summer, opens on lime and lemon with a floral lift before a fresh, elegant, structured palate. Classic Dão white, ready now as an aperitif or alongside simply cooked fish, and happy to wait a few years in the cellar.
