A friend of the shop, Martin Nittnaus grew up at his family's winery in Gols, where they have made wine since 1684, then studied literature instead of winemaking, fell for wine during his studies, and set out to make something of his own rather than simply follow his father. In 2015 his father gave him a piece of vineyard to experiment with on his own, and two years later came the first Elektra, from Lindauer, a cool, limestone-rich site of old Grüner Veltliner vines in the Leithaberg village of Jois that supplies every bottle of the white. He makes it under the Nittnaus label he started with his brother Andi and their cousin Lydia, from organically farmed fruit that is picked by hand, destemmed, fermented with native yeasts, and rested on its full lees in wood. A delicate, fruity nose picks up spice and flowers; the palate is lively and finely knit, carried by a vivid streak of freshness into a long finish. That first vintage tasted so electric to Martin that he bottled it just as it was, and every vintage since has carried the same current.
