Comm. G.B. Burlotto supplied Barolo to the royal House of Savoy and was selling wine in bottle when nearly everyone else shipped it in cask; today, under Fabio Alessandria, the founder's great-great-grandson, it stands among the most coveted names in all of Barolo. The 2022 carries particular weight: the estate bottled none of its single crus this vintage, directing fruit from its famed Verduno sites, Monvigliero included, into this classic Barolo. Grown on the calcareous Sant'Agata and Cassano Spinola marls of Barolo's northernmost commune, the fruit is hand-harvested into small boxes, destemmed, and fermented in open French oak vats with daily punch-downs, then matured at length in large French oak casks with a further rest in bottle before release. Red cherry, rose, and a savory spiced edge ride high acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins through a long, perfumed finish. Built for the cellar, and worth the wait.
