Jean-Marie Fourrier worked a vintage with Henri Jayer and did a stint as a cellar hand at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon before taking over his family's Gevrey-Chambertin domaine full-time in 1994. Clos Saint-Jacques is classed Premier Cru, though many rank it with the Grands Crus. The Fourrier strip, the smallest of its five holdings at 0.89 hectares, faces southeast at the start of the Combe de Lavaux on very chalky limestone and clay-heavy marl, and was planted in 1910. The wine rests on its lees without racking, sees 20 percent new oak, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2023 is perfumed and spiced, with red and dark berries, cherry, rose, and a flick of orange peel over a stony core, then fine, silky tannins and a finish that keeps going. Give it time; this is a wine for the 2030s and well beyond.
