The Chambéry-fraise began on French drink menus: vermouth mixed with local strawberries. In 1902 Rosalie Dolin, daughter of the house, gave that drink a recipe and a bottle of its own, and Chambéryzette had its glory days on terraces in Lyon, in the cafés of Paris, and in France's first ski resorts. Dolin, family-owned and dating back to 1821, still builds it on Vermouth de Chambéry with strawberries grown in the Alpine valleys. It smells of wild strawberries and drinks lightly sweet, never syrupy, with the vermouth's herbs running under the fruit and enough body to hold its own in a cocktail. Swap it in for the sweet vermouth in a Negroni, or pour it over ice with lemonade and take it out to the patio.
