From the Würtzberg, the steep monopole vineyard above a bend in the Saar at Serrig whose red slate and quartz soils have carried Riesling since the estate was founded in 1898. The journalist Dr. Jochen Siemens bought the property in 2006 and made this nobly sweet Auslese the very next year, in a ripe Saar vintage the estate said yielded nothing below Spätlese quality. Fermented spontaneously in small stainless steel tanks and bottled early to preserve fruit and freshness, it holds 69 grams of residual sugar against 8 grams of acidity at just 8 percent alcohol: the classic Saar equation of density lifted by cut. Built to mature in bottle, it shows its density, fine acidity, and considerable polish through a long finish, now approaching two decades of age. Mature Saar Auslese in half bottle; this is what the format exists for.
