Château Giscours was ranked a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification, but its vineyard was already being expanded three centuries earlier, when the Bordeaux draper Pierre de Lhomme set about planting vines on wild land here. On its croupes, hilltops of deep Quaternary gravel that the Garonne carried down from the Pyrenees, the roots reach as deep as ten meters. Eric Albada Jelgersma took over the running of the estate in 1995, restructuring the vineyard and renovating the winery. His children have led it alongside general manager Alexander van Beek since his death in 2018. The 2012 is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, fermented in concrete and stainless steel with a 35-day maceration and aged 17 months in French oak, half of it new. It opens with aromatic lift and real freshness, generous red fruit and a touch of licorice, and the Cabernet Sauvignon carries a handsome finish. Left Bank Bordeaux of genuine pedigree, now well into its second decade.
