Château Branaire-Ducru, a fourth growth of the 1855 classification at the southern entrance to Saint-Julien, has kept a constant signature under the Maroteaux family: fruit, freshness, and elegance. The estate pioneered gravity-flow winemaking in the Médoc in 1991 and vinifies parcel by parcel, macerations running up to three weeks before longtime winemaker Jean-Dominique Videau composes the blend. In 2014 that meant 65 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 27 percent Merlot, 6 percent Petit Verdot, and 2 percent Cabernet Franc, picked from late September into the second week of October and aged at least eighteen months in barrel, with 60 percent of the barrels renewed each year. The nose is expressive and ripe with its freshness intact; the palate is fleshy from the attack, dense, and lingering. Saint-Julien classicism that argues with balance rather than force.
