There is no other bottle like it. Green Chartreuse is still made by the Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, its formula of 130 plants, barks, roots, and flowers known in its entirety to just two brothers. First sold in 1840 as a liqueur de santé, a health liqueur, it is blended at the monastery and distilled at Aiguenoire in Entre-deux-Guiers, and its famous color comes from a second maceration of plants, nothing else. Long aging in tall truncated oak vats rounds a spirit that still lands at a bracing 55 percent, and it keeps evolving in the bottle. The nose is powerfully herbaceous and peppery; mint, pine, and citrus drive the palate; the finish turns to bittersweet tea. Essential in a Last Word, transformative over ice. Four centuries of secrecy, one glass at a time.
