The Rare Wine Co. launched its Historic Series in 2003 with Vinhos Barbeito to resurrect the styles of Madeira early American cities actually drank, and New York Malmsey honors the rich, luscious Malmseys New Yorkers prized from the colonial era until after the Civil War. The blend is 85 percent Malvasia, the richest of Madeira's classic varieties, grown at Arco de São Jorge, with 15 percent Tinta Negra from Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, matured in French oak casks by the traditional canteiro method of slow, gentle warming rather than tank heating; the Special Reserve designation means the average age exceeds ten years. Caramel, toasted nuts, orange peel, and clove arrive in abundance at 19 percent, yet fresh, vibrant acidity pulls the wine away from outright sweetness. No decanting required, and it holds for months once open. Early America's cellar, faithfully revived.
