Jean Foillard Morgon Cote du Py 2023

Few wines carry the reputation of cru Beaujolais like Jean Foillard's Côte du Py. A disciple of Jules Chauvet and a member of Morgon's Gang of Four with Lapierre, Thévenet, and Breton, Foillard farms the famed slope above Villié-Morgon organically; its schist and granite soils, laced with manganese, hold Gamay vines from 10 to 90 years old. The cellar method is old Beaujolais at its purest: whole clusters fermented slowly over three to four weeks, six to nine months in used barrels sourced from top Burgundy estates, no filtration, and little to no added sulfur. At 13.5 percent alcohol, the 2023 delivers the cuvée's signature of serious minerality, earthy stone and plum, and dusty tannins that reward a long sit in the glass. Lush, velvety texture that makes it dangerous young and rewarding old.
