Willi Schaefer Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2005

Willi Schaefer's holding in Wehlener Sonnenuhr amounts to a single quarter-hectare parcel of stony Devonian slate, the smallest piece of a Graach estate that farms barely four hectares of Riesling in total. The site tends toward richness and white stone fruit beside the racier Graach crus, and 2005, a ripe Mosel vintage of high must weights that kept its freshness, suited it well. Made in the era of Willi Schaefer himself, a decade before son Christoph took over, this Spätlese now carries over twenty years of bottle age from an estate long noted for the longevity of its Rieslings. Mature Schaefer is scarce; mature Schaefer Sonnenuhr, scarcer still.
