Few Austrian labels are as instantly recognizable as Knoll's baroque Saint Urban, on the bottle since 1962, and few estates carry the Wachau's banner with more authority. The family has farmed around Loiben for three generations, and Kreutles, a Ried (single vineyard) beside Unterloiben, sits low on the slope in deep loess blown over glacially eroded gneiss: classic Grüner Veltliner ground. From vines up to 45 years old, the 2021 carries the Smaragd designation, the ripest of the Vinea Wachau's dry categories, and was raised in steel and old cask on its lees. Green apple and white pepper lead over lemon and wet stone, the texture rich but held taut by fresh acidity through a grapefruit-tinged finish. Loiben in a glass, from one of its defining families.
