The Boxler family crossed from Switzerland into Alsace in 1673 and has been in Niedermorschwihr ever since; Albert Boxler first put the family name on a label in 1946, and his grandson Jean now runs one of the most respected domaines in the region, its holdings centered on the granite hillside of Grand Cru Sommerberg. Chasselas is Switzerland's grape, holding barely a hundred hectares in all of Alsace, and Boxler gives his parcel, vines more than four decades old on the granite slopes, uncommon seriousness. Hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and bottled without fining, it lands bright and springwater-fresh, with a faint tingle that recalls a mountain stream more than a still white. A Swiss specialty at its finest French address.
