Riccardo Tiberio was working as export manager for a well-known Abruzzo winery when he came across a very old plot of genuine Trebbiano Abruzzese near the hill town of Cugnoli, a rarity in a region where Bombino Bianco, Mostosa, and Trebbiano Toscano were long mistaken for the real thing. He bought it in 2000, released a first vintage in 2004, and has since handed the estate to his children: Antonio farms the vineyards and Cristiana makes the wines. The vines grow at 350 meters on limestone over gravel and sand and are dry farmed, and this bottling is 100 percent Trebbiano Abruzzese from the estate's own massal selection. Only free-run juice is used, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, and the wine goes to bottle unfined and unfiltered. Pear, grapefruit, apricot, and orange blossom lead to a juicy, mouthwatering palate of green apple, almond, and anise. Delicate and light-bodied, with far more depth than its weight suggests.
