Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer farm biodynamically in Gols, in Burgenland near Lake Neusiedl, and Rosé by Nature is exactly what the label promises. Recent releases lean almost entirely on Blaufränkisch with a small dose of Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Altenberg, Salzberg, and Rosenberg vineyards on loamy chalk soils. The fruit is picked by hand, fermented spontaneously with ambient yeasts and no temperature control, matured in stainless steel and amphora, and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur. Strawberries, hay, and herbs on the nose; salted watermelon and a mineral streak across a palate with more texture than rosé usually gets. Serious farming, easy drinking.
