Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Le Chapitre 2019

Le Chapitre earned back its name with this vintage: when the Marsannay appellation was drawn in 1987, this historic clos in Chenôve was left out and its wine sold as Bourgogne, until INAO reclassified the site to village level beginning with 2019. The vineyard's pedigree is ecclesiastical, once held by the chapter of the collegiate church of Autun, and its soil is a light pink, calcium-rich scree of grèzes litées over White Oolite on an east-facing slope near 300 meters. Sylvain Pataille farms just over a hectare here, the vines planted in roughly equal thirds around 1950, 1980, and 1990. Whole-cluster fermentation on ambient yeasts and 18 months in barrel produce the most structured red in his range: dark cherry and wild berry fruit on a firm build of fine, powdery tannins, savory and stony through the finish. Restored history that rewards patience.
