Sylvain Pataille Marsannay l'Ancestrale 2019

L'Ancestrale is Sylvain Pataille's flagship, the cuvée that gathers the domaine's oldest Pinot Noir: vines planted between 1930 and 1945 across three of Marsannay's best-regarded sites, Clos du Roy, Clémengeot, and Les Ouzeloy, on light pinkish grèzes litées over White Oolite at 290 meters, among the northernmost serious vineyards in the Côte d'Or. The fruit ferments whole-cluster on ambient yeasts with gentle extraction, then rests a full 24 months in barrel, half of it new, with a small sulfur addition only at bottling. The 2019 carries dark berry and mulberry fruit with heather and floral lift, dense and powerful yet refined, a saline minerality running through the long, firmly structured finish. Old vines and a patient élevage, with the gravity to match.
