The Côte du Py is the pride of Morgon, an ancient rise of schist, granite, and manganese above Villié-Morgon, and no name is tied to it more closely than Jean Foillard. He and his wife Agnès took over the family domaine in 1980, and alongside Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton, Kermit Lynch's Gang of Four, he revived the old disciplines preached by Jules Chauvet: organic farming, vines from 10 to 90 years old, severe sorting, minimal sulfur, no filtration. Whole-cluster fermentation runs three to four weeks, followed by six to nine months in used barrels from top Burgundy estates. The 2022 is a fuller expression at 14 percent alcohol, plum and earthy stone framed by dusty tannins that keep unfolding in the glass. In magnum, the format that best suits its patient arc: open one in a decade, or pour it for a table tonight.
