Giuseppe Mascarello Toetto Freisa Langhe 2022

Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio, custodian of the great Monprivato vineyard and a benchmark of traditional Barolo since 1881, grows this Freisa in Toetto, a half hectare in Castiglione Falletto not far from Monprivato itself. Freisa is a traditional Piedmontese variety, and the Mascarellos give it the Nebbiolo treatment: floating-cap fermentation in the classic style for fifteen to twenty days, maturation in mid-sized Slavonian oak casks, and bottling after two years. Deep ruby with a spicy, unmistakably varietal nose, it is dry and firmly built, with genuine body, abundant tannin, and the stuffing to develop over four to six years in the cellar. A weeknight route into one of Barolo's most storied cellars.
