Les Borniques is one of Chambolle-Musigny's smallest premiers crus, roughly a hectare and a half of vines pressed against the grand cru Le Musigny and just above Les Amoureuses, with scant topsoil over limestone bedrock veined with white and yellow clay: ground nearly identical to its illustrious neighbor. Frédéric Magnien, who works from his family's base in Morey-Saint-Denis, has built a reputation as one of the Côte d'Or's most meticulous winemakers, and since 2015 he has aged part of his production in hand-turned terracotta jars, pulling wood out of the equation to let site speak. The 2019 leads with black cherry and dark plum, layered with spice and stone, its texture more caress than grip. Musigny's geology on a premier cru label.
