Dureuil-Janthial Mercurey Rouge 2023

Vincent and Céline Dureuil took over the family domaine in Rully in 1994, heirs to the Janthial family, present in the village since the thirteenth century, and have since made it one of the reference estates of the Côte Chalonnaise. Their Mercurey comes from a single third-of-a-hectare parcel in the lieu-dit Les Doués, at the top of the slope on the western side of the appellation, facing east over clay-limestone soils. Farmed organically and picked by hand, the fruit is destemmed or not depending on the year, cold-soaked for about a week in conical wooden vats, then aged 12 months in barrel, a third of it new, and six more in steel before an unfined, unfiltered bottling timed to the lunar calendar. The 2023 opens on sweet berries, spice, and a streak of licorice, broad and supple on the palate, with fine tannins. Serious Pinot Noir, built to reward years in the cellar.
