We love Barolo. And when you take a sip, it's clear to see the feeling is mutual. Watching it evolve in the glass is the stuff of alchemy, starting off bold, tannic, and almost stubborn but over time, it softens into something hauntingly beautiful. Red fruit, Rose petals, tar, truffle; it’s all there, wrapped up in a wine that evolves for decades. That ability to age and transform is why collectors obsess over it and why even casual drinkers find themselves coming back for more.
What many people don’t realize is that Barolo is a mosaic of vineyard sites and soil types, each with its own unique voice. As much as with Pinot Noir in Burgundy, Nebbiolo in Barolo is a master of terroir expression, shifting in personality depending on where it’s grown; one hillside producing structured, brooding wines, another offering something more ethereal and floral. No producer is more committed to getting the most distinct expression of each site than Paolo Scavino. To this end, vinification and aging are the same for all of the non-Riserva Barolo to emphasize the specific terroirs.
Nestled in the heart of Piedmont, Italy, the Paolo Scavino winery has been a beacon of Barolo excellence for over 70 years. Founded in 1921 by Lorenzo Scavino, the winery began as a small family operation in Castiglione Falletto, a village celebrated for its prime Nebbiolo vineyards. Today, under the leadership of Enrico Scavino and his daughters Enrica and Elisa, Paolo Scavino is synonymous with innovation, tradition, and world-class Barolo wines. They own 30 hectares of vineyards across some of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, all farmed sustainably, with a focus on preserving the land for future generations.
Iconic Vintages: 2011, 2015, 2016, and 2020
The other thing about Barolo is that vintage matters. Each year has its own quality and character. Fortunately, Piedmont has seen consistently wonderful to extraordinary vintages the past ten years or so. Scavino, in particular has produced some of its greatest wines in recent memory.
Simply put, Scavino belongs in your cellar because these are profound wines with distinct personality. This is the place to start if you want to understand how grapes can express the land or just how great wine can be. We promise, love Barolo and it will love you right back.
